Sargent Aerospace & Defense products are found on many major Commercial and Military aircraft in operation worldwide. Products and systems include hydraulic actuation and valve systems, locking actuators, steering metering control valves, fuse pins, hot forged bolts, pneumatic ducting and valve seals, tubing system alignment joints, engine hot section and structural components, airframe components, shock strut bearings, Teflon lined spherical bearings and broad component maintenance, overhaul, spares logistics and power-by-the-hour support services. Sargent is also a major supplier of hydraulic control valves to the US Navy on all Nuclear Class Submarine programs. Sargent has an immediate opening for a Director of Engineering.
Purpose and Scope:
The Director is a key member of the Sargent leadership team and will report to the VP of Operations and Engineering. The Director is responsible for all of the Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering and R&D efforts for the RBC Sargent Tucson facility. The Director will provide technical expertise and leadership in establishing the goals and priorities for the organization. The Director should possess a strong professional drive and the ability to drive strategy into execution. This role will set the standards for design, analysis, manufacturing processes and qualification testing across four product lines: Aerospace Components, Kahr Bearing, Aerospace Hydraulics and Marine Hydraulics. The Director will also lead the team to develop R&D breakthroughs in Sargent s Engineering Center of Excellence.
Responsibilities:
Collaborates with Design Engineering, Business Development and the customer base to determine the strategic plan for developing innovative technologies.
Determines capital equipment and staffing requirements for all projects, including all ROI calculations, labor & material estimates and initial project schedules.
Provides oversight of all department management responsibilities including staffing, performance reviews, employee development, and budgets
Works with Operations to examine cost reduction strategies on existing product, ensuring that all qualification requirements are considered.
Leads cross-functional team to perform all research, design, analysis and testing of new products, technologies and product improvements.
Develops problem-solving methods to support new product development and/or sustaining production of existing designs.
Ensures proper use of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to facilitate inspection and manufacturing throughout all departments
Reviews design concepts for completeness and proper application of engineering principles
Coordinates with Business Development, Value Stream Managers, Supply Chain and Production Control to analyze the production steps and processes in order to minimize production cost and lead-time as well as maximize product quality
Directs the manufacturing engineers in creating processes, defining machining methods and tooling designs used to produce new products
Develops and institutes best practices across all departments and value streams
Maintains and updates Engineering work instructions for compliance with customer requirements, ISO/AS standards industry practices
Implements KPIs and metrics across all departments to drive Continuous Improvement
Forecasts staffing requirements across all areas
Position requires an average of 10% travel
Education and
Experience:
U.S. Citizenship is required. Must be eligible to obtain a US Passport.
BS in Engineering, preferably Mechanical, Aerospace or Material Science MS or MBA preferred
Minimum of 10 years of product design and development
Minimum of 4 years of engineering management
Proven ability to work across multiple engineering disciplines, e.g., electrical, mechanical and materials
Strong knowledge of metallic & polymer materials
Strong skills interpreting engineering designs & specifications
Experience setting and managing multiple priorities
Strong organizational dynamics management
Fully competent with Microsoft Office tools
Solid understanding of Aerospace and Defense industry Quality, Design and Qualification requirements
Proficiency in determining economic feasibility of projects
Successful history of project/program management including budgets, staffing and scheduling
Strong background in Design for Manufacturability and machining/metal-forming practices
Excellent verbal/written communication and presentation skills

Experience:
Mechanical aptitude displayed through personal hobbies/projects
ERP system knowledge
Familiarity with metal forming and manufacturing methods and processes
Experience with document control and configuration management
