Vehicle Description 1929 Ford Model A Woody wagon formerly of the Sam Pack Collection.
Although it was not uncommon to see wood bodied Fords prior to 1929, it was actually the first year it was available as a body style from Ford, credited to Edsel Ford who desired such a vehicle for his estates in Michigan and Maine.
Designs were drawn to Edsels request, and body production entrusted to Murray Corporation of America in Detroit, one of Fords principal body suppliers.
The wood came from Henry Fords forests at Iron Mountain, in Michigan's northern peninsula.
This was high quality Maple, with Birch plywood used for the panels.
This example was built in August of 1929, and was owned by a Midland area Texas family from new, originally a family vehicle and later used on their farm.
In the Early 40's it was used as an ice wagon, carrying blocks of ice to farmhouses.
It was eventually relegated to a pasture at the farm.
In 1963 it was purchased by a local Ford enthusiast who spent the next 11 years restoring the wagon.
That owner enjoyed and cared for the wagon until Pieter Dwinger purchased it in 1989 and had it shipped to Southern California.
Peter spent the next 10 years re-restoring it to Blue Ribbon/ Concours d' Elegance condition.
It has been 100% restored to model A judging standards, using original parts, no reproductions other than the tires, curtain pan, and floor mats.
The Woody was entered into the Santa Barbara California Concours D' Elegance and won 1st place in the pre-1935 Antique class.
Next it won 1st place in the Woody class at the ATSC Newport Concous D' Elegance.
The Woody was entered into the 2000 National Model A convention judging in Kansas and won 1st place.
It was also entered into the 2002 National Model A Convention in Riverside Ca and again won 1st place in the Blue Ribbon Class.
This Woody wagon later became part of the Sam Pack Collection of Fords.
It still remains in Show condition and has been well maintained.
One of the finest running and driving A's I have had the pleasure to own.
